St. Gregory the Illuminator was born into tragedy: his father, Anak the Parthian, was hired by the Sasanian king to assassinate Armenia's ruler Khosrov II around 258 AD. After the murder, Anak was killed and his entire family exterminated — Gregory, an infant, was the sole survivor.
